No ceremony is complete without the Kiss. In fact, there was a time when an engagement would be null and void without one. Dating back to early Roman times, the kiss represented a legal bond that sealed all contracts. The kiss at the end of the wedding ceremony was legally binding and signified mutual acceptance of the contract of marriage.
WE ARE SO GLAD TIMES HAVE CHANGED!
The wedding kiss is actually an extremely toned down version from way back, when a newly married couple was required to consummate their marriage in the presents of several witnesses. This consummation viewing was required to insure that the newlyweds actually consummated there marriage. (Hmmm, would this be considered pornography by today's standards?) A wedding kiss was later acceptable as the newly married couple's devotion to each other. Thank goodness, can you imagined having sex in front of our parents or grand parents....Ewwwwww!
